Translate content to different languages. #24
Comments
I agree on the restriction being bad... One issue I realized about this is that the links we post are to websites/papers written in English. Not sure if it makes sense to translate the text that links to something if that something is in English. |
That is a good point, at the same time, having at least some information about this projects in other languages could be a way to lower the barrier even if just a tiny bit? I mean, if people can at least see a summarized version of a project in their native language, they can make a better decision on whether or not they want to spend time and effort to translate/understand the complete project? |
Maybe we could try out https://ai.facebook.com/blog/introducing-many-to-many-multilingual-machine-translation/ Thinking of language accesibility at least for the summaries is good first step. It goes both ways. If projects are submitted in a different language, we need an english summary for current filters to work. Then there could be a language flag noting that the rest of the project is in a different language. In terms of translating english content to multiple languages, we could start with just having the summary ( in say spanish and chinese) and flagging that the rest lf the content is in english |
Even though english is the main language of science, by not having our content in more languages, we end up shutting a lot of people out of the website and from being able to learn about these awesome open science projects.
It would be interesting to have a semi-automated way to translate the content of the website into different languages:
maybe there are better tools out there that I am not aware of...
