“I am thrilled for umoci to be part of the OCI family of projects,” said Aleksa Sarai, senior software engineer at SUSE and lead developer of umoci. “We needed a lower-level tool like umoci at SUSE, but no such tool existed at the time. From the outset, I intended for umoci to help the wider OCI community build tooling around the OCI image format by abstracting away most of the busy-work needed to implement the specification -- and in turn, the development of umoci did have an impact during the specification development (such as formalizing the conversion between OCI image configuration and OCI runtime bundle configuration). There is still plenty of interesting work to be done in umoci, and I encourage folks who are interested in the subject to give us a hand.”

“We are very excited to welcome these projects into the OCI – it has been a long time coming and the culmination of a lot of work by the TOB and project creators,” said Chris Aniszczyk, executive director of the Open Container Initiative. “umoci and ORAS will provide users with a simple way of creating, updating, and storing container images, and a method for publishing and retrieving any type of content to or from an OCI registry.”

As an OCI project, umoci is bound by the [OCI Code of Conduct](https://github.com/opencontainers/.github/blob/master/CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md) and the [OCI Charter](https://github.com/opencontainers/tob/blob/master/CHARTER.md). umoci has its own [specific governance](https://umo.ci/GOVERNANCE.md) rules which determine how changes are accepted into the project, how maintainers are added or removed, how releases are proposed and released, and how the governance rules are changed.
