Many people said that they would want to know candidates for a particular race before downloading.

@zstumgoren notes (and I agree):

this should really be done using a legit search backend such as solr/elasticsearch. ... I'd vote to make this a top feature for future consideration, noting that it's only useful (and comprehensive/accurate across time) once we've fully loaded all results for all years and office types for a given state.
