There have been many discussions about that on the OFF Slack over the years.

  • I have a few ideas (calorie trackers), but I'd be very curious about use cases.
  • Also, that would be a special API with essentially text queries (or bogus barcodes, which raises some issues 1000 foods per 140 existing databases)
  • Generic databases often have terrible names (like Parsil, fresh, cut )
  • Currently, there's no way to scan a non-barcoded product. We'd need a state of the art Computer Vision model to do anything interesting on mobile

It would be nice so it could be linked to different entries for bell peppers in red like https://de.openfoodfacts.org/produkt/4061458242097/bio-paprika-gut-bio and https://de.openfoodfacts.org/produkt/4311527911943/paprika-rot-markt-tag that have no nutrition values assigned to them or other things.

https://naehrwertdaten.ch/ could also be included in the list of possible inclusions and is already used by FOSS software like Energize (https://codeberg.org/epinez/Energize/)
