The definition would be "a collection process in which a data item (IAO:0000027) is collected for research or scholarly purposes"

This would be a child of collection process and sister to specimen collection process.

The immediate use case is recording observations of taxa (presence/absence)

This should be a (synonym or broader synonym) of observing process BCO:0000003
