In normal editing this is not needed and not wanted.

Currently, holding down Alt (Option on macOS) disables snapping regardless of the kind of feature selected. I map in a region where cases like #7619 (comment) are common; would the logic invert so that holding down Alt would temporarily reenable snapping? Or would I need to take the alternative approach of making the road a member of the boundary relation?

A workaround to this is to disable boundaries showing in iD;

  1. Press F to bring up the Map Data tab on the right sidepanel
  2. Under Map Features, disable Boundaries

imo Boundaries should be disabled (or "read only"/semi-transparent etc) by default

Boundaries and the ways that form them are already filtered out by default as of 7da27f2 for #4292 and e1da28b for #5601.
