There are a few flaws with highway areas (highway=* + area=yes):

  • Casings are drawn as lines, not areas, and get smart linecaps. This breaks beziercurving.
  • At least some of the styles result in a pretty thick line around the area. See http://informationfreeway.org/?lat=59.91117327298741&lon=10.751076438526066&zoom=17&layers=B000F000F for an example where this looks weird. Perhaps they should be layered differently as well?
  • They should probably be done at z12 and z13 too
  • Have a look at the current rules layout, currently there are way too many duplicate-ish tests for area=yes, would it be possible to gather everything together like for bridges and tunnels?
