I've replaced Google's DNS with one run by the Chaos Computer Club of Berlin. This satisfies commotion-openwrt bug #52

This should not need testing.

What are the response times on CCC's DNS server? Is it acceptably fast for our use, especially from overseas?

213.73.91.35 (CCC) has a typical response time of 100ms. 8.8.8.8 (google) is between 12ms and 60ms. After picking an OpenDNS server (208.67.222.222), it is actually the fastest at <10ms on average. OpenDNS is based in the US, but barring larger service or policy issues, it might be the best option. Another consideration is geographic location, but any of these are fast enough for typical use.

From Amsterdam, CCC's response time averages 22ms, while OpenDNS is less than 1ms.
