Apparently companion crashes when it is ticked for 9x.

Do we actually have a use for this at all anymore? I seem to remember we had decided to ditch export to old versions.
If that's correct, we could leave the checkbox but when ticked we read the eeprom and warn the user if it has an older version or a variant that doesn't match the one selected in companion.
Actually we could also remove the checkbox and always do that check.

Does anybody reproduce it? I can't (at least under Linux). I checked on Valgrind and found a missing initialization, but it's not possible this is the root cause of the crash.
