ctgan-server-cli

This ctgan package provides a simple way to deploy CTGAN, a GAN-based data synthesizer onto a remote server. The package allows you to create synthetic samples of tabular data i.e confidential or proprietary datasets for sharing. For more details and use cases, see References. The package contains the following additional features:

  • simple username/password feature to separate multiple models/synthetic datasets for multiple users on server
  • As soon as original data has been uploaded and stored in memory for fitting, the original file is deleted from server
  • pytorch models are stored in compressed serialized .gzip for efficient storage
  • synthetic csv files are stored in compressed .gzip on the server
  • .json file containing dictionary of original column dtypes (i.e 'string', 'float', 'int') is created for each model, allowing the original dtypes to be restored automatically after sampling

Important Caveats!!!

The username/password feature is not secure as the username/passwords are stored in an unencrypted dictionary. This feature exists for proof of concept only and as a simple method to separate models/data between TRUSTED users on the same server.

In the original ctgan package, you must specify which columns are discrete before fitting. For simplicity I have setup this package to automatically treat 'string' columns as 'discrete' and treat all numerical columns as continuous. In the future I will try and add the ability for users to specify discrete_columns.

Installation

You can install from GitHub by:

  • copying the ctgan_host folder onto your local machine
  • copying the ctgan_server folder onto your server
  • updating the ctgan_host/config.sh to point towards your server
  • Place any original data files (.csv format) into the ctgan_host/original_data folder

You will also need to install the required packages onto the server:

pip3 install ctgan --no-cache-dir

If you're using a fresh linux server then you'll probably need to install pip and git before installing ctgan:

sudo apt -y update
sudo apt -y upgrade
sudo apt -y install python3-pip
sudo apt -y install git
git clone https://github.com/oregonpillow/ctgan-server-cli.git
pip3 install ctgan --no-cache-dir

Requirements

  • CTGAN has been developed and tested on Python 3.5, 3.6 and 3.7
  • ctgan_server package tested on Python 3.6.9, Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
  • It is assumed you have already added your public ssh key to the known lists on your server and have access to it. An article explaining how to do this.

This generated synthetic model is now stored on the server in a compressed serialized file format. We can sample from the model using the sampler.sh script:

The sampled data is now saved within the local folder synthetic_output

In the case that a user does not want to re-sample data from a model, but instead wants an exact carbon copy of a previously generated synthetic dataset, they can use the downloader.sh script:

Description of folders inside 'ctgan_server'

  • scp_folder(temp)
    When a user samples data from a pre-trained model this folder is used to store the data temporarily so the scp protocol knows where to grab data from. Folder is purged after file is sent.

  • download_folder(temp)
    When a user wants to download previously generated synthetic data without resampling (i.e grab the exact same synthetic data again), that particular synthetic data file is temporarily stored here so the scp protocol knows where to grab data from. Folder is purged after file is sent.

  • model_database
    stores all the trained user models grouped by user

  • original_data(temp)
    when the user sends an original data csv to be trained on, the file is temporarily stored here until it's loaded by the fitting script, at which time the file is removed from this folder.

  • synthetic_csv_database
    Stores sampled synthetic data grouped by user

  • credentials
    user credentials can be updated within the credentials.py file which contains a dictionary called 'username_password' and is automatically imported by the server scripts.

File naming structure

All models and sampled data stored on server database have a timestamp according to ISO8601 (yyyymmddthhmmss): 'yyyy' 4digit year
'mm' 2digit month
'dd' 2digit day
't' time seperator
'hh' 2digit hour
'mm' 2digit minute
'ss' 2digit second.

model file example (compressed serialized pytorch model):
