Map tweaks #4871
Comments
Wow, thank you for the feedback! Let's change this issue's focus for isolines because custom bookmark icons work has already started in #2795 Choosing a custom distinct house icon after implementing the PR mentioned above should likely remove the need to increase its size. Long-tapping for that is unintuitive, and implementing that code logic may be complex. Let's return to that size topic when custom icons will be finished. Regarding isolines (topo-lines), improving them requires a total implementation of how we store elevation data now, it is in our plans, but it is a very complex task that also requires #4163 to be done. Increasing isolines font size can make the map not so readable in some cases, it would be easy to do however in a designated outdoor style. Avoiding text drifting can be done by moving texts when you drag the map. It may not look good and distract users. Maybe they should be displayed a bit more often? |
Thanks for the feedback. I finished my solo canoe trip about 6 weeks ago. 1700km, 5 months, 4 major South African rivers, solo. Your app was key for basic NAV and reading the contour of the river ahead. In hindsight, I would have liked to have known the length of a river segment between confluences, just by tapping on a river. Well done on the hard work. |
Thank you very much for using our app, and for the feedback! Did you publish a full story somewhere? ) |

Hi biodranik Would like to ask if custom icons with adjustable size has had any progress? I would like to use my own set of icons, like home icon Really hoping it makes it into organic maps features.🙏 |
Do you mean for bookmarks? Or can you ellaborate, please? |
Check #2795 |
When I took a 1700km solo canoe trip, it was difficult to remember color based bookmarks/waypoints when I was fatigued and exhausted. I would use red for a campsite one day, but when I was really fatigued, I would use a different colour. Turned my bookmarks/waypoints into a mess. Weirs are dangerous, and were marked with another colour bookmark/waypoint, but when you been paddling for 4 to 6 hours, color's become meaningless, and I mixed up my color's from time to time. I need to select a picture icon based on function. Every time I stop to camp, I need to drop a tent icon. Every time I need to refill with water, I need to drop a water supply icon. If I am due to meet someone at a coordinate, I need to drop a human icon. If I could load my own icon set, to expand on the color bookmarks/waypoints, I can choose specific icons for specific functions that are picture based. When under extreme exhaustion, color bookmarks get easily forgotten. My bookmarks/waypoints need to stand out from everything else. |
Hi Guys
Your app is totally cool. I am doing a 1500km solo canoe trip across South Africa right now, and your app is a staple map for me.
Check out the story on YouTube.
Still have 500km to go. Have completed about 1000km asof today.

Below are some suggested tweaks to the UI in a real world situation.
Topo-lines altitudes text drift out of screen area. Need to swipe to find them. Please keep them always visible.
Topo-lines altitudes font size too small.
Topo-lines altitudes density. It is useful for me to see better granulation of topo-lines. Would be useful if the density of the labels can be adjusted. Example, every topoline, every second topo line, every 100m, every 200m, every 500m, etc.
Ability to add custom icons, like a tent icon, house icon, car icon, etc. I would like to add my own icons besides the ones already present.
Ability to change icon size by long clicking a specific icon. This allows importance to be added to a given icon position. Example, My house icon can be set larger than other icons.
Well done on your work. You have really built a usable real world app.
