Does the app provide background sync? Since no account is added to the account section I guess not. Am I right?

The app provides no background sync yet. But I'm going to implement it in a feature version.

please make it configurable (on, off) in the options - i'm thinking on battery...

Yes, sure ;-) I thought about that the user can choose between times e.g. never, 1h, 2h, 3h, 6h, 12h, 24h sync. The default will be never then.

Should work since version 0.4.8 (Sync is triggered when Android wants to sync all accounts) --> Android --> Settings --> Accounts & Sync --> ownCloud News Reader --> Auto sync

by default this option is off.
