Otherwise, bash silently continues past an error leading to some very opaque error messages later on. Run apt-get update On the Ubuntu 14.04 EC2 instance, you need to run apt-get update first, otherwise you run into a bunch of 404s when trying to install packages. Typo replaced -e by trap
