2023 SRG Request
10. The SRG encourages the JTC to consider methods to determine the maximum input sample size for the age compositions (e.g. Stewart and Hamel 2014).

Per our 2023/2024 SRG response to this request, we are electing to start with analyses that investigate alternative ways of handling survey age compositions. After such, we can look more into this request. I'll change this to 2025 milestone, with the note that we can certainly work to compile a complete (or complete as possible) list of the number of fish sampled by year and the number of hauls/trips by year for fishery and survey data. Once we have that list, the Stewart and Hamel 2014 method will be easy to implement.

For reference, the general (multi-species informed) input sample size equation from Stewart and Hamel approach is:

  1. Input effN = 𝑁trips + 0.138 ∗ 𝑁fish if 𝑁fish/𝑁trips is < 44
  2. Input effN = 7.06 ∗ 𝑁trips if 𝑁fish/𝑁trips is ≥ 44

I used this equation to explore how input samples sizes would change for the fishery from 2008 - present and found that they on average nearly double. Our Nfish/(Ntrips or Nhauls) is <<< 44, so equation 1 was used during this time period.
