[Feature Request] Document Type to have Custom Fields #6180

I ABSOLUTELY agree with this feature request. I would love to use this on my document types. Manually adding custom fields is a hassle. |

Isn't that already working, using workflows? |

You can create a workflow to add custom fields (my current configuration), but has main issues for me. First it's cumbersome to do this configuration for each new document type, and it is not obvious for someone when looking at the document types that, there is a workflow that will add the custom fields. And second, if the "smart" feature initially decides that a document is of type A will add the custom fields, but when you assign the right document type, it will be complicated to know which ones to remove. I still will prefer to have the option to define the custom fields directly when I create a document type. Thanks |

I’m with Jordi. It would be a better/more intuitiv UX if we define custom fields for document types, within the creation/edit screen. I would even say it should be on all other data types as well. If you create a correspondent, a tag, etc.

I don't know how many document types you have, but it should be a finite number.
and it is not obvious for someone when looking at the document types that, there is a workflow that will add the custom fields
It's the same level of obviousness then to have a document type which has these fields automatically. I don't see any differences there.
And second, if the "smart" feature initially decides that a document is of type A will add the custom fields, but when you assign the right document type, it will be complicated to know which ones to remove.
There you have a point, but that should be possible, if you have two workflows for a document. One where you delete all not used custom fields, and one where you add them. If you sort the delete fields workflow before the add fields workflow, it should work.

Would also pledge for "template style" document types. Assigning custom fields is a tedious task if done manually or might be unreliable if done automatically trough workflows. (Like in cases, where a workflow has been poorly designed (Layer 8 issue)) Should co-exist with current implementation of how to assign custom fields to individual documents. (Manual / via Workflow) |

I absolutely support this request. Commercial input management systems like Kofax Transformation Modules, Prosar-AIDA, smartFix etc they all follow the paradigm: The document type determines a fixed set of fields. |

I am currently evaluating paperless for our company and I absolutely second the idea to add custom fields automatically based on document type. Imagine more users working together, some of them without matching permissions to add custom fields and so on... The 'normal' user should find the document with all custom fields set just to fill data in. |

Description
I would like to be able to add Custom Fields to Document Types.
Use case:
I want to have a Document Type called invoice.
I also want that ALL INVOICES have the custom fields: Amount, VAT, Due-Date, Paid
I would like that once I set a document to document type "Invoice", it will automatically add the set of custom fields that are defined as default for an invoice.
Extra:
If I decide to add a new custom field to the document type invoice, it will automatically add this custom field to all the existing documents of the type invoice.
