IE8 is looking really rough right now, so there's a few things that could go a long way to get things functioning better:

Add HTML5 Shiv will get the header and nav to display correctly.
Add respond.js to get IE8 to display large screen styles
Possibly create an ie-specific stylesheet for IE to iron out any wrinkles.

I've had mixed luck with Respond.js. It seemed to fall apart when you used media queries in a linked CSS file with a media query assigned.
