We have currently around the black old P logo, which should be updated to new book logo. So on Twitter, GitHub, Gravatar, favicon, everywhere.

Great. Can you first list all the accounts where we have to change things? You can look under the IT services wiki page for some ideas. I think Gravatar + things listed there, but please check.

I made a version of logo to use around, which is a bit cropped already: https://github.com/peerlibrary/outreach/blob/master/identity/logo/with-title/PeerLibrary-cropped.png

Use this everywhere.

@mitar, this is the version with title (the current black one doesn't have a title), do you want to use this everywhere?

@mitar I've updated the LinkedIn page using the above logo, check it out https://www.linkedin.com/company/peerlibrary?trk=company_logo

I would use it with title for now, because logo is not yet as known. We can remove the title in a year or two. :-)

But I now see that we are using wrong image. The image I linked above and cropped is not the best for what we are using it now. Transparency should be just around the book, but inside the book it should be always white. Otherwise on sites which respect transparency, logo is without the pages, just lines.

this is the new png with white background. https://github.com/peerlibrary/outreach/blob/master/identity/logo/with-title/PeerLibrary-cropped-white.png.

I moved files around and named so that it is clearer what is what.

@FZSS: Do you think we should create now an .ico file with multiple sizes in? Or just use the png file?

I noticed on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, that you have been using the image with the title as avatar. You should use the one without the title. It's not legible at small sizes, the name PeerLibrary is already written in text next to the avatar and the PeerLibrary-icon-* files are specifically optimized for small sizes (bigger radius, less lines, thicker lines). Right now in small sizes the logo with title doesn't look good.

The issue is that you can upload there only one version of the logo. And because they are showing also the big version in some places, we had to upload the big version. We are currently using this: https://github.com/peerlibrary/outreach/blob/master/identity/logo/with-title/PeerLibrary-cropped-white.png

So there is not really a way to import icon versions. :-(

But we could do the one without the title. I proposed that we are using the title for now because our logo is not known enough, so that we link the name with the logo better. In a year or so we can then simplify to only logo.

Or are you suggesting that we should be using large version, but without a title already now?

Yes, exactly. If you go to the Facebook Page or Twitter profile, the name PeerLibrary is written in text as the name of the account. It does not need to be written in the avatar; you still get the logo-name connection. Same when it appears in the feed, you have avatar + PeerLibrary in text.

The only place I see that this is not the case is on blog.peerlibrary.org, but there you can simply switch the theme to include the big logo instead of the now small avatar.

I'll make you a highres version of the icon since the current max is 150px, but for example Twitter shows it at 200px on the profile. And when I upload it, you can switch it in those places.

OK. Thanks.

Also, what we made is that logo was a white backgound internally. Completely transparent logo didn't look good.

Yeah, it looks good only on light backgrounds (like on peerlibrary.org, when the animated background is pretty light).

mitar commented Dec 3, 2014

OK, but then do we need a high res of the icon? I would just use then the https://github.com/peerlibrary/outreach/blob/master/identity/logo/with-title/PeerLibrary-cropped-white.png, but remove the title.

@MatejJan

MatejJan commented Dec 3, 2014

No, because when it gets zoomed down (as an avatar in the news feed, how people see it 95% of the time) it looks just as bad as it does now. That's why you need to upload the icon version. Yes, on the profile page it'll be a tiny bit big and not the same as the full logo, but I think it's a way better compromise.

@mitar

mitar commented Dec 3, 2014

OK. You prepare whatever you think it is the best and we will use it. So We also have Gravatar.

Do you think we should have for favicon an .ico file with multiple sizes?

@Retronator made a version of the logo which is more suitable for social media: https://github.com/peerlibrary/outreach/blob/master/identity/logo/without-title/PeerLibrary-icon-700px-transparent.png

It scales better when is made smaller. So let's do the last iteration on this and update everywhere to it. And then close the ticket.
