Introduction to Web Mapping and Internet GIS

March 2014

Department of Geography NUI Maynooth

This is a short 2 x 2 hour workshop for Introduction to Web Mapping and Internet GIS. The workshop course is designed to provide a gentle introduction to 'getting maps on web-pages'. There is a focus on using open source tools and open source software on data. We will use OpenStreetMap maps and data, Leaflet for our map Javascript, and look to open data sources for other data. The workshop assumes that you have XAMPP (http://www.apachefriends.org/index.html installed to provide a web-server environment and a text editor such as Geany http://www.geany.org/. The workshop notes and slides make reference to MS Windows path names - these can be easily changed for Linux and MAC installations of XMAPP - please refer to the XAMPP documentation for details.

The course is delivered by Dr. Peter Mooney (Web Page). The course assumes no prior knowledge of web server technologies, Javascript, or programming. At the end of the second workshop the entire lecture notes in PDF and Open Document Format will be uploaded to this GitHUB respository.
