<p style="padding-top: 0pt; " class="paragraph_style">Neonatal intensive care units are not all the same and they can not all offer the same services to all newborns presenting a major health problem or to the newborns that they were born long before the expected date of childbirth.<span style="line-height: 14px; " class="style"><br /></span></p>
<p class="paragraph_style">In the NICUs we usually distinguish three levels of care:<br /></p>
<p class="paragraph_style_1"> <span class="style_1">a) Basic newborn care</span><br /></p>
<div class="paragraph paragraph_style_1"><div style="height: 160px; width: 107px; clear: left; float: left; height: 160px; margin: 2px 2px 2px 0px; position: relative; width: 107px; " class="tinyText style_SkipStroke inline-block stroke_0"><img src="LevelsOfCare_files/droppedImage.jpg" alt="" style="border: none; height: 160px; width: 107px; " /></div><span class="style_1">This level of care provides care in healthy newborns, that they have been born near the expected birth date. It provides daily medical care, including daily assessment of their condition.</span><br /></div>
<p class="paragraph_style">Typically, premature babies born after 35 weeks of gestation and up to 37 weeks of gestation and have no particular problems or complications can be hospitalized there. <br /></p>
<p class="paragraph_style"> Also, infants born earlier than 35 weeks of gestation can be hospitalized there for a while, until they are stabilized and can be transported in a unit that can provide the appropriate level of care for them. <br /></p>

<p class="paragraph_style_2"><span style="line-height: 18px; " class="style_2"> </span><span style="line-height: 17px; " class="style_3">At this level of treatment it is also possible to start or maintain intravenous access to medicines , feeding through a catheter and nasal oxygen with continuous monitoring of oxygen saturation. (e.g, for infants with chronic lung disease requiring long-term oxygen supply and monitoring). <br /></span></p>
<p class="paragraph_style_2"><span style="line-height: 17px; " class="style_3"> In the basic newborn care level phototherapy (light treatment) can also be provided to babies who need it because of jaundice.<br /></span></p>

<p class="paragraph_style_1"> <span class="style_1">b)Advanced newborn care</span><br /></p>
<p class="paragraph_style">This level provides care to babies born around 32 weeks of gestation or later and to full-term babies who require close monitoring or supply of intravenous antibiotics after birth. At this level of care can be hospitalized infants with certain health problems associated with prematurity, such as jaundice or difficulty to eat or stay warm.<span class="style_5"> <br /></span></p>
<div class="paragraph paragraph_style"><div style="height: 211px; width: 140px; clear: left; float: left; height: 211px; margin: 2px 2px 2px 0px; position: relative; width: 140px; " class="tinyText style_SkipStroke inline-block stroke_0"><img src="LevelsOfCare_files/droppedImage_3.jpg" alt="" style="border: none; height: 212px; width: 140px; " /></div><span class="style_5"></span><span class="style_5"></span>At this level it is possible to stabilize premature or ill infants before their transfer to a facility in which neonatal intensive care is provided. <span class="style_5"> <br /></span></div>
<p class="paragraph_style"> Care for infants who are in recovery after intensive care hospitalization , is also provided at this level.<span class="style_5"><br /></span></p>
<p class="paragraph_style_1"> <span class="style_1">This level can provide intravenous infusions and possibly parenteral nutrition for a limited time. It can also provide nasal oxygen and mechanical ventilation for a short duration (24 hours).<br /></span></p>
<p class="paragraph_style_1"><span class="style_1"> </span> <span class="style_1">c)Intensive care level</span><br /></p>
<div class="paragraph paragraph_style">At this level complete care for infants born at 28 weeks of gestation or less (22-24 weeks of gestation) with very light weight (1000g or less), is provided. <span style="line-height: 17px; " class="style_2"></span><div style="height: 208px; width: 310px; clear: left; float: left; height: 208px; margin: 6px 6px 6px 0px; position: relative; width: 310px; " class="tinyText style_SkipStroke_3 inline-block stroke_0"><img src="LevelsOfCare_files/droppedImage_4.jpg" alt="" style="border: none; height: 208px; width: 311px; " /></div><span style="line-height: 17px; " class="style_2"></span>This level also provides constant support by mechanical means and it is able to provide advanced types of ventilatory support for very sick babies.<br /></div>
<p class="paragraph_style">At this level are also hospitalized newborns who have undergone surgery or newborns that have very serious health problems.<br /></p>
<p class="paragraph_style">For babies who are hospitalized at this level there is direct access to a series of specialized scientists from a wide range of specialities that can execute at any time specific diagnostic tests and emergency processes.<br /></p>
