editing individual points

I am trying to apply a classification algorithm to classify the points stored in the database. pc_explode seems to be extremely slow and then patching points again seems to be a headache. what would be the best way to approach this. right now i am using the pdal reader to convert into las then input the las to my classifier app then overwrite the table.
