After merging #1303 unmatched subpatterns are set to NULL.

The test ext/pcre/tests/request47456.phpt was created after the PR was created.

Merged e55e93a

(merged down to 7.0 ... in the most messy way possible ...)

Thanks :)

Why was a BC break merged down to 7.0? Never mind why a BC break was introduced in #1303 against a minor version 7.2...

This BC change was not merged down to PHP 7.0, It was an accident that this test was merged to the PHP-7.0 branch and it was quickly reverted before a release ever even happened. Take a look, the changes do not exist in the PHP-7.0 branch:
https://github.com/php/php-src/blob/PHP-7.0/ext/pcre/tests/request47456.phpt#L37

Or you could look at this PR which reverts the merged test:
#2285
