Generic with string|null

Hello everybody 👋 🙂

I need to solve a problem, and it has to do with generics and currently I do not really understand why it does not work 😄

we have a helper method, which cleans up strings before saving them to the database. Some properties contains only a string, some can be nullable. We are using the same method for both cases. Now PHPStan correctly complains about the string only property, which does not accept null.
Trying to be smart, I tried to solve this with a generic: https://phpstan.org/r/d804d495-3b2c-4318-8580-74bb7c1c2480 😁

And now errors occur which I do not understand 🙂
Maybe someone could light this up, or maybe someone has even a better solution.
