After installing phpvirtualbox i got this message :

Shoud i downgrade virtualbox or i missing something ?

There is a branch of phpvirtualbox for Virtualbox 6, you can download it there : https://github.com/pasha1st/phpvirtualbox-6
it works nicely for me (virtualbox 6.0.8r130520), the only issue I have is the snapshots that are not working.

I have the same problem with installed virtual box v6.1.2.
I tried to update the phpVirtualBox 6.0-0 -/- VirtualBox 6.0.x compatible with latest version but I getting the same error.
What can I do to fix this?

There's currently no support for VirtualBox 6.1.x
The develop branch works nicely with VirtualBox 6.0.x

Any updates on this? I literally wasted hours trying to get everything working just to realize I'm running too "new" a version to use this

@marcobto58 The develop branch (default) is 6.1.x compatible.

git clone https://github.com/phpvirtualbox/phpvirtualbox.git will get you that version.

If you don't have/like git, and only want the source, you can find a release version of this repository at Release 6.1
