I was excited to find this software. But unfortunately it hangs everytime on my Ubuntu 16.04 8 GB laptop. 4/4 times. I wonder if I am doing something wrong.

What exactly do you mean with "it hangs"? When saving it takes a while to convert the recorded video to a GIF. As long as it is processing, the record button stays inactive. When it finishes it becomes active again. Depending on the size and duration of your recording this can take a while and use a lot of RAM.

It can happen that this process aborts due to restrictive default resource limits for imagemagick on Ubuntu. In this case you can have a look at #112 for workarounds.

By hangs, I mean I can't move my mouse cursor when it is processing. It is a short 1-2 min recording. I have waited almost 4-5 mins for processing.

If your computer starts to react slowly this is an indicator that your physical RAM is used up and the system starts swapping. Yes, imagemagick can use a huge amount of RAM during this processing.

You might try editing /etc/ImageMagick-6/policy.xml and setting a limit for resource memory. See also #112 (comment) and following.

I will close this as a duplicate of #125
