We can't do 3D staunton-style pieces but we might consider discs like in some travel chess sets or maybe consider squares like in Steve Jackson's Tile Chess, David L. Smith's Chex, or Kamikaze Chess
Arial/Arimo lack Unicode chess symbols so perhaps fall back on P,B,R,B,Q,K as rank symbols.
Implement Add a 'board' component #153 and Add a 'bit' component #155 before hand
