Because it's not possible to select "no-date" for expiration- and effective date.
Previous selectable '-' is missing in each select element.

This is a known issue with plone.app.event: plone/plone.app.event#94

Since p.a.event is shipped with p.a.contenttypes this affects all content types now.

I created a pull-request: plone/plone.formwidget.datetime#10 to fix this issue. @saily: maybe you could look at it.
