rails-load-stats

Rails-load-stats is a simple bash script that processes a logfile of any Ruby on Rails app to analyze where the load to the app comes from. It produces statistics about:

  • Particular requests: how many requests against each method were raised, how much (min/max/avg/sum) time these took, and what percentage of overall execution time was spent by processing the different types of requests.
  • Level of concurrency: how many requests were processed in parallel, what was the max/avg/mean/90%percentile. This helps with scaling your app.

Example output (from a foreman deployment):

there were 3196 requests taking 782320 ms (i.e. 0.22 hours, i.e. 0.01 days) in summary

type count	min	max	avg	mean	sum percentage

concurrent requests:
- MAX: 60 when processing request with ID 0b5552e0
- AVG: 29
- MEAN: 33
- 90%PERCENTILE: 50

Results are stored in results.* files, individual requests per each type are available in times.* files, numbers of concurrently processed requests at a time in concur-requests.txt. Method names have stripped class namespaces - just in the table.

Usage:

./analyze.sh logfile [sort-results]

where (optional) sort-results can be a value from 2 to 7 determining column to sort the results by. By default, results are sorted alhpabeticaly by method names.

Requirements:

bash version >= 4
