In many editors, holding Ctrl while hitting left/right arrows moves the cursor by an entire word, instead of just one character at a time. Whether or not it counts punctuation as a word separator seems to vary by editor.
Similarly, Shift + arrows moves the cursor, but highlights characters that the cursor moves over while Shift is held. Releasing Shift and hitting an arrow again usually moves the cursor, but un-highlights the current selection. Up and down arrows also work and highlight across lines.
Ctrl + Shift combines both the power of highlighting with Shift, with the power of traversing entire words with Ctrl.
