@kylecorry31, I take it this happens every time you suspend? Does it matter how you put the system into suspend(lid close/hotkey/selecting suspend in gnome menu ? If you suspend the system and then immediately awaken it, does it happen as well?

I currently have a lemu8 in front of me and am struggling to recreate the issue.

@kylecorry31

So it doesn't seem to occur every time suspend is activated - which may make it hard to track down, and I am having trouble replicating right now. It's only happened to me when my laptop is unplugged (no power, no USB mouse) and suspend was activated by lid close if I remember correctly. I did just try all three ways to activate suspend and it didn't have the issue.

@kylecorry31

My normal scenario when this issue occurs is:

  • Using laptop while connected to power and USB mouse
  • Close laptop lid
  • Unplug power and USB mouse
  • Bring to my class (~15 minutes later)
  • Open laptop and find that keyboard/touchpad isn't working

I had disabled all the suspend settings in the GNOME control panel and only had suspend on lid closed (in Gnome tweaks) activated and the problem still occurred (as of about a week ago).

I was just able to replicate this issue with my normal scenario listed above. It appears the function keys still work, and I was able to recover from the issue by toggling suspend with the function keys and awakening the computer again (this was while it was unresponsive)

I've run into this from time to time as well. I've got an Oryx Pro and keep the software up to date pretty religiously. It's not a frequent thing for me or something that just started happening recently. I also tend to use a USB mouse (and with it I use the Touchpad Indicator to automatically enable and disable the touchpad based on whether or not the mouse is plugged in -- this would be a nice feature to have built into Pop!_OS), but the times I've run into it have been when the laptop put itself to sleep when it was open and I was temporarily engaged in other activities. It most recently happened to me today, and Googling around for it is how I found this thread. The tip above about toggling suspend via function keys worked for me, too, even though the keyboard seems otherwise unresponsive when this happens.

I also have this issue with my galp3 running pop_os 18.10. It doesn't freeze every time I close the lid, but it has happened a couple times in the past few days.

I ran into this today. Just received a Darter Pro with 18.10. Fresh setup. Opened the lid this morning and the touchpad worked but the keyboard was not responsive. It then seemed to lock up, and the screen went black and the power button light turned off. Pressed power again, start screen came back and again the touch pad worked but keyboard was non-responsive. I clicked the battery icon in the top right and then the pause button. Screen went dark and power button light went off again. Pressed power button, start screen came back, but this time both the touchpad and the keyboard worked, and I was able to enter my password and login. Session resumed as it was where I left it last night. Very strange.

Today after waking up my System76 Galago Pro, the laptop keyboard and trackpad were unresponsive. After plugging in my USB keyboard, I could type fine. Also was able to use my bluetooth mouse, so the problem seems limited to the laptop input devices.

I tried some poking with xinput, to not success. PopOS preferences GUI doesn't even show trackpad settings, making it seem deactivated.

Here's some xinput output:

Sounds like the keyboard did not wake up like the rest of the system. Does this happen every time, or is it intermittent?

This is also happening on my Darter with pop 19.04 at times. Although when it wakes up i can not type inn the password but i can use the fn + f12 to activate sleep again. So keyboard is reacting to some things. Tough i also now have the issue that when i put it to sleep it wakes up again right away. Status led flashes one or two times then it wakes up automatically.

BIOS/firmware: 7.4 or is it 1.07.04

I just got a brand new Darter Pro, got the same problem. After going into sleep mode the keyboard is unresponsive so I can't type the password. However it does respond to changing the backlight, so the keyboard isn't completely dead. I also had the same problem as @lpeabody where it turns off suddenly in this state. For initial login, I haven't had the problem.

Btw, I haven't attached any mouse or anything at all to the computer

I have the touchpad issue on my Thinkpad T440s, when I close my lid and when I suspend from the terminal. Keyboard works fine but touchpad doesn't work.

Currently using 19.04 and latest updates.

Just chipping in here as well - I have a Thinkpad 13 (2nd Gen) which originally had this issue but now seems to be fixed after the recent updates however my partners Thinkpad X240 is experiencing the same issue I had and that others here are still experiencing ^^

Everything works just fine on boot but after wake from sleep, the trackpad is totally gone. Keyboard works fine. Fully up to date pop os 19.04.

Would love to see this issue fixed as the rest of pop os is pretty solid for both of us but this is a bit of a blocker :/

Same issue here on a new Darter running 19.04. The keyboard (often) doesn't work after resuming, but I'm able to press fn+f12 to suspend again. I haven't had issues with the trackpad, however.

@mmstick It sounds like no one (including myself) has created a support ticket with System76. Would that be helpful to you?

@NOVATechnocrat

Same problem on Darter Pro. Only happens when I hit keys before the system has fully returned from sleep. Closing lid again, waiting for sleep, and opening again without hitting keys before the screen turns on seems to be a consistent work-around. Also, fn + f12 works, which essentially does the same thing as closing the lid. Ubuntu issue.

If you install manjaro or endeavor OS then it is a straight forward installation with GUI and everything. I know manjaro uses the Calamares installer. Everything installs automatically for you, including Nvidia (it actually even better implemented on manjaro). There is a "manjaro settings" app that has section for kernels, graphics switching and many other things. The package manager is pacman and it is one of the best I've tried so far. The repositories have pretty much everything. The AUR is a godsend repository. A couple of clicks and you get what you want.

I had this issue few years ago and now I have the same issue in Ubuntu 20.04, but I've found an article to config the logind config file, to disable the suspend when we are closing the laptop, so for me it just go to sleep within 5 min of inactivity, so I can close the laptop (even if it doesn't make any action I know that my laptop will sleep in 5 minutes so that's ok for me).
here the article

In my case i did change this :

  • HandleLidSwitch=ignore – do nothing.

Hope it can help...

Hey guys,
I still have the same issue.
I'm running pop_OS 20.04 on a XMG Fusion Notebook. The issue occurs always, when I disconnect the power plug, while it is suspended.
I can add another small piece of information, which isn't reported, yet:
The on-screen keyboard of the window manager doesn't work neither. So, it is no hardware issue and also no gnome issue. Something prevents the OS or the gdm to parse the keyboard. Function Keys still works, so the kernel still interprets the keys.

Any further suggestions?

@NoobyNiceDev, I faced the same problem on the same machine... I added the following to the boot command

i8042.direct i8042.dumbkbd

I guess you are using systemd boot... you can try this fix first by booting into the systemd boot menu, hitting e and adding the line above at the end of the command line

Then you can add it permanently in /boot/efi/loader/entries/Pop_OS-current.conf

Then you can add it permanently in /boot/efi/loader/entries/Pop_OS-current.conf

It's a bit easier to add them with kernelstub:
sudo kernelstub -a i8042.direct i8042.dumbkbd

@bradleeedmondson

@rojizo @leviport Would this interfere with System76 hardware hotkeys (using Fn)? Brightness, volume, disable LCD, suspend-by-hotkey, etc.

rojizo commented Mar 17, 2021

Hi @bradleeedmondson I don't think so... I don't have a System76 computer but my Fn combinations work (I cannot see a reason for not working in other computer, but that may be my ignorance!)

@leviport

If that happens, you can always just remove the parameters:
sudo kernelstub -d i8042.direct i8042.dumbkbd

Or if you added them at the boot menu the way @rojizo described, simply rebooting will get rid of them.

@KarkanAlzwayed

So this issue was presented in early 2018 and there’s no solution in almost 2021?

This is a very annoying bug that causes lost work and time. Can we get an eta on a fix at least?

It is May 2021 and this issue is still there. I tried Pop_OS! last week and it was even worse. It literally happened right out of the box with nothing installed. Fresh installed, update and upgraded, closed the lid, came back after an hour or so and the same thing happened. Laptop was absolutely unusable and I had to drop into a tty to reboot it.

I have an HP Omen and after it sleeps the external USB mouse and bluetooth keyboard occasionally stops working. The Built-in keyboard and trackpad are ok, but all external USB ports seem to be unusable - unplugging and re-plugging the mouse doesn't work, and interestingly I don't think they have any power because the red light under the mouse doesn't even come on. I upgraded to Pop!_OS 22.04 and have the same issue with the same solution still working.
Sometimes, the issue is not even that bad. The touchpad works, but two-finger scrolling reacts weirdly. So I do my quick hack, and it is back to normal.
On the other hand, besides the suspension, it happens to me when undocking my laptop from the docking station, which calls several similar functions as when coming back from sleep.

n3m0-22 added a commit to pop-os/default-settings that referenced this issue Jul 22, 2022
This is to fix the issue of the trackpad and keyboard not working on some laptops. It is a modification of the original bluetooth suspend fix. I have tested it on two Thinkpads and a Vaio that were having this problem.

Atfter seeing this closed issue above from n3m0-22, I tried testing the following i8042 boot options on my laptop:

i8042.direct i8042.dumbkbd i8042.reset i8042.nomux i8042.nopnp i8042.noloop

@jacobgkau suggested "nomux or reset and nomux are all that have been needed" - perhaps the case for System 76 Laptops. I tried these combinations first, but I was getting BIOS errors.

This Reddit post was rather helpful in explaining the problem and suggested to "Add i8042.reset and i8042.nomux to your kernel boot parameters. If that doesn't fix it, also adding i8042.nopnp and i8042.noloop is worth a try."

After testing lots of combinations, I found the following worked for me on my Dell Inspiron 13-5368 with no BIOS errors:

sudo kernelstub -a i8042.reset
sudo kernelstub -a i8042.nomux
sudo kernelstub -a i8042.nopnp
sudo kernelstub -a i8042.noloop

The trouble is this issue is intermittent, so it's hard to test all combinations of i8042 boot options, but this combination seems to work for me so far.

Quick note - make sure you have a USB Mouse & Keyboard to hand because the following boot options made my laptop keyboard not work at all (I panicked slightly at the encryption login):

i8042.direct i8042.dumbkbd i8042.reset i8042.nomux i8042.nopnp i8042.noloop

i8042 Boot Options:
i8042.direct - Put keyboard port into non-translated mode
i8042.dumbkbd - Pretend that controller can only read data from keyboard and cannot control its state (Don't attempt to blink the leds)
i8042.noaux - Don't check for auxiliary (== mouse) port
i8042.nokbd - Don't check/create keyboard port
i8042.noloop - Disable the AUX Loopback command while probing for the AUX port
i8042.nomux - Don't check presence of an active multiplexing controller
i8042.nopnp - Don't use ACPIPnP / PnPBIOS to discover KBD/AUX controllers
i8042.reset - Reset the controller during init, cleanup and suspend-to-ram transitions, only during s2r transitions, or never reset
i8042.unlock - Unlock (ignore) the keylock

I am not a dev & been using Linux for less than a year, so go easy on me! :)

Was having the same issue with the touchpad on my ThinkPad E14. I had the suspend mode set to "Linux S3" in the BIOS. I changed it to "Windows and Linux" and the issue has disappeared. Hope this helps.

Thanks everybody for your share! After four days' checking, searching and trying, I finally fixed the failed keyboard input problem. Previously, I just continued trying to modify the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub, but sadly this didn't work. Finally I tried sudo kernelstub -a i8042.xxx method shared above, and this did work!

More Info: Pop!_OS 22.04, Lenovo Yoga 14s 2021. I tried Ubuntu 22.04 on my computer before, without finding any problem with my keyboard, so I'm convinced that Pop!_OS is the problem source. Anyway, I love the design of Pop!_OS, and the most disturbing problem is solved forever!
