System Heat

This mod tries to build a cleaner, more predictable system for handling thermal management than the stock KSP Core Heat mechanic, which is obtuse and painful to use.

The overall concept is as follows:

  • Parts can add heat to or consume heat from a vessel's cooling system
  • The vessel's cooling system is split into Cooling Loops that include some or all of the vessel's parts.
  • Each Cooling Loop functions independently

Cooling Loops

A Cooling Loop is a set of Parts that are connected together to distribute heat. An example might be a nuclear reactor and four radiators, two Convert-O-Trons and two static radiators, or really any combination of heat producing and removing parts. Any number of loops can be created on a ship.

A Cooling Loop has a specific Nominal Temperature, which increases as parts add heat. Higher heat is bad for parts - some parts like it very cool, at some parts prefer it hot hot.

Your goal as the player is to set up Cooling Loops so their temperature doesn't exceed the 'healthy' level of the parts that compose them. This involves correct assignment of parts into appropriate loops and correct choice of radiators for each loop.
