when I start vim, for instance, my rvm is at 1.9.3@some_project. When I open a new pane for vimux, it would be nice if it preserved that, so the first command doesn't fail

For what's it's worth, if your project includes a .rvmrc (as most do), you do get the correct rvm

I think if people want this functionality it should come as a rvm-specific plugin rather that adding this into vimux. Also as you said I think the best solution is to use a .rvmrc file.
