Something similar (but without RGB and without Adafruit) is already possible by using buttons (attached to GPIO pins) instead of a rotary encoder. I've been doing this for many months. |

After some years of using Volca FM, I am used to working with two hands when it comes to editing the operators. The encoder is too slow for such a workflow. |

Unfortunately the way it handles the buttons and things is specific to this particular board, so it would need some special cases in MiniDexed to support it. There is some discussion on the topic here: #349 (comment) There is a similar one by DF Robot but that has the same issue... Kevin |

Thank you, Kevin, for the reply and sorry for doubling the question. I agree with Benet that it would be a very good HAT solution for MiniDexed but I understand that you want to keep the code "unbiased". |

I have looked at both the Adafruit and DFRobot modules and thought about how to do it, but both are a fair bit of work for not much gain really. The DFRobot might be simpler, and probably fairly easy to support as long as an external I2S audio module (like the pcm5102) isn't used, as it uses the same pins for the buttons... BUT, it requires a series of special I2C commands to turn on the backlight to the display... So I've toyed with a special config setting for a sequence of I2C bytes that could be sent for situations like this... but it is a lot of parsing of config data, bespoke reverse engineering of the existing libraries (not hard really, it is all there is code), but for a board that won't support a "proper" DAC... so it really isn't worth it... The Adafruit module could be supported by adding a 23017 I2C IO expander module to circle (which would be a useful addon) and then some way to configure it... but the display is hanging off the 23017 too. This isn't so dissimilar to the I2C modules we already support for a 1602 display (they are off a PCF8754 expander IIRC), so with some tweaking that might be supportable too... I've been tempted several times now with both modules - I even bought a DFR module to play with - but each time, reach the same conclusion - its a fair bit of work for a sub-optimal setup just to make it easy to try... It feels like a neat thing to do, but I wouldn't recommend using either of these in a "proper" build. Kevin |

I'd say, lets focus on cost effective "generic" off-the-shelf hardware components and let's not complicate the code to support expensive "specialty" hardware. |
