To ensure the requirements and tools in the Open Data Policy continues to meet user needs over time—those of both agencies and the public—we committed to doing regular reviews of the required common core metadata schema.

Many of you have submitted suggested changes in the issue tracker, and there has been healthy discussion online. To supplement this online discussion, we will also be convening people the old-fashioned way: in person. The focus of the discussion will be 1) determining needed changes to the schema and 2) deciding if the needs constitute publishing a new version now, or at a later date.

Please join us if you are able to:

Thursday, July 17th, 2014
1:00pm – 4pm EST
GSA
1800 F St NW Room 1462
Washington, DC

For those of you who cant make it in person, the agenda will be focused on reviewing the issues in this repo. We encourage you to submit items for discussion before July 16th in the issue tracker if you haven’t already so they can be incorporated into the agenda.

Please RSVP in the comments below or to hvandyck@omb.eop.gov

An update for this event:

Thanks to the many people (nearly 40!) who joined for a productive conversation on possible changes to the common-core metadata schema. The discussions were very fruitful, and we did our best to make sure that a summary of the conversation that took place in the room were transcribed into the comment thread on the GitHub issue. For those interested in how discussion was structured, below is list of the breakout sessions, and a link to the open issues on GitHub that were discussed in that session. There was consensus around several minor changes to the schema, which we will be compiling into a coherent proposal for reaction soon. We are still determining the best timing and approach for updating the schema, and are incredibly aware of the level of effort to implement any change too soon. That piece of the conversation is still on going, but look out for the compilation of proposed changes for further discussion and circulation soon.
