OpenWrt by default uses root for most services but there are ways to improve security for services while still fitting into the OpenWrt ecosystem. The guide should explain features like StackProtector, running a service as a less privileged user, OpenWrt jails, LXC. There should be a discussion of the pros and cons of each so developers have figure out what is best for their purposes.
