Use of a flash memory device for the BIOS was added in series "[PATCH v10 0/8] PC system flash support", commit 4732dca..1b89faf, v1.1. Flash vs. ROM is a guest-visible difference. Thus, flash use had to be suppressed for machine types pc-1.0 and older. This was accomplished by adding a dummy device "pc-sysfw" with property "rom_only": * Non-zero rom_only means "use ROM". Default for pc-1.0 and older. * Zero rom_only means "maybe use flash". Default for newer machines. Not only is the dummy device ugly, it was also retroactively added to the older machine types! Fortunately, it's not guest-visible (thus no immediate guest ABI breakage), and has no vmstate (thus no immediate migration breakage). Breakage occurs only if the user unwisely enables flash by setting rom_only to zero. Patch review FAIL qemu#1. Why "maybe use flash"? Flash didn't (and still doesn't) work with KVM. Therefore, rom_only=0 really means "use flash, except when KVM is enabled, use ROM". This is a Bad Idea, because it makes enabling/ disabling KVM guest-visible. Patch review FAIL qemu#2. Aside: it also precludes migrating between KVM on and off, but that's not possible for other reasons anyway. Fix as follows: 1. Change the meaning of rom_only=0 to mean "use flash, no ifs, buts, or maybes" for pc-i440fx-1.5 and pc-q35-1.5. Don't change anything for older machines (to remain bug-compatible). 2. Change the default value from 0 to 1 for these machines. Necessary, because 0 doesn't work with KVM. Once it does, we can flip the default back to 0. 3. Don't revert the retroactive addition of device "pc-sysfw" to older machine types. Seems not worth the trouble. 4. Add a TODO comment asking for device "pc-sysfw" to be dropped once flash works with KVM. Net effect is that you get a BIOS ROM again even when KVM is disabled, just like for machines predating the introduction of flash. To get flash instead, use "--global pc-sysfw.rom_only=0". Then, when qemu subsequently does a kvm_deassign_irq() (called by assign_irq(), in the system_reset path), the kernel ends up calling '__msix_mask_irq()', which performs a write to the memory mapped msi vector space. Since, we've explicitly told the device to disallow mmio access (via the 0 write to the command register), we end up with the above 'Unsupported Request'. The fix here is to first disable MSI-X, before doing the reset. We also disable MSI, leaving the device in INTx mode. In this way, the device is a known state after reset, and we avoid touching msi memory mapped space on any subsequent 'kvm_deassign_irq()'. Thanks to Michael S. Tsirkin for help in understanding what was going on here and Jason Baron, the original debugger of this problem. When qemu dies unexpectedly, for example in response to an explicit abort() call, or (more importantly) when an external signal is delivered to it that results in a coredump, sometimes it is useful to extract the guest vmcore from the qemu process' memory image. The guest vmcore might help understand an emulation problem in qemu, or help debug the guest. This script reimplements (and cuts many features of) the qmp_dump_guest_memory() command in gdb/Python, https://sourceware.org/gdb/current/onlinedocs/gdb/Python-API.html working off the saved memory image of the qemu process. The docstring in the patch (serving as gdb help text) describes the limitations relative to the QMP command. Dependencies of qmp_dump_guest_memory() have been reimplemented as needed. I sought to follow the general structure, sticking to original function names where possible. However, keeping it simple prevailed in some places. The patch has been tested with a 4 VCPU, 768 MB, RHEL-6.4 (2.6.32-358.el6.x86_64) guest: - The script printed > guest RAM blocks: > target_start target_end host_addr message count > ---------------- ---------------- ---------------- ------- ----- > 0000000000000000 00000000000a0000 00007f95d0000000 added 1 > 00000000000a0000 00000000000b0000 00007f960ac00000 added 2 > 00000000000c0000 00000000000ca000 00007f95d00c0000 added 3 > 00000000000ca000 00000000000cd000 00007f95d00ca000 joined 3 > 00000000000cd000 00000000000d0000 00007f95d00cd000 joined 3 > 00000000000d0000 00000000000f0000 00007f95d00d0000 joined 3 > 00000000000f0000 0000000000100000 00007f95d00f0000 joined 3 > 0000000000100000 0000000030000000 00007f95d0100000 joined 3 > 00000000fc000000 00000000fc800000 00007f960ac00000 added 4 > 00000000fffe0000 0000000100000000 00007f9618800000 added 5 > dumping range at 00007f95d0000000 for length 00000000000a0000 > dumping range at 00007f960ac00000 for length 0000000000010000 > dumping range at 00007f95d00c0000 for length 000000002ff40000 > dumping range at 00007f960ac00000 for length 0000000000800000 > dumping range at 00007f9618800000 for length 0000000000020000 - The trace-events "disable" keyword turns an event into a nop at compile-time. This is important for high-frequency events that can impact performance. The "disable" keyword is currently broken in the simple trace backend. This patch fixes the problem as follows: Trace events are identified by their TraceEventID number. When events are disabled there are two options for assigning TraceEventID numbers: 1. Skip disabled events and don't assign them a number. 2. Assign numbers for all events regardless of the disabled keyword. The simple trace backend and its binary file format uses approach qemu#1. The tracetool infrastructure has been using approach qemu#2 for a while. The result is that the numbers used in simple trace files do not correspond with TraceEventIDs. In trace/simple.c we assumed that they are identical and therefore emitted bogus numbers. This patch fixes the bug by using TraceEventID for trace_event_id() while sticking to approach qemu#1 for simple trace file numbers. This preserves simple trace file format compatibility. New capabilities include the use of RDMA acceleration, use of network buffering, and keepalive support, as documented in patch qemu#1.
There are currently three types of object_property_add_link() callers: 1. The link property may be set at any time. 2. The link property of a DeviceState instance may only be set before realize. 3. The link property may never be set, it is read-only. Something similar can already be achieved with object_property_add_str()'s set() argument. Follow its example and add a check() argument to object_property_add_link(). Also provide default check() functions for case #1 and #2. Case #3 is covered by passing a NULL function pointer. The docs for glfs_init suggest that the function sets errno on every failure. In fact it doesn't. As other functions such as qemu_gluster_open() in the gluster block code report their errors based on this fact we need to make sure that errno is set on each failure. This fixes a crash of qemu-img/qemu when a gluster brick isn't accessible from given host while the server serving the volume description is. This will be a different patch series for the driver. However, it is simple enough to keep qemu running on empty areas update, which is what this patch provides. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1151363 Signed-off-by: Gerd Hoffmann <kraxel@redhat.com>

Booting the r2d machine from flash fails because flash is not discovered. Looking at the flattened memory tree, we see the following. FlatView #1 AS "memory", root: system AS "cpu-memory-0", root: system AS "sh_pci_host", root: bus master container Root memory region: system 0000000000000000-000000000000ffff (prio 0, i/o): io 0000000000010000-0000000000ffffff (prio 0, i/o): r2d.flash @0000000000010000 The overlapping memory region is sh_pci.isa, ie the ISA I/O region bridge. This region is initially assigned to address 0xfe240000, but overwritten with a write into the PCIIOBR register. This write is expected to adjust the PCI memory window, but not to change the region's base adddress. Peter Maydell provided the following detailed explanation. "Section 22.3.7 and in particular figure 22.3 (of "SSH7751R user's manual: hardware") are clear about how this is supposed to work: there is a window at 0xfe240000 in the system register space for PCI I/O space. When the CPU makes an access into that area, the PCI controller calculates the PCI address to use by combining bits 0..17 of the system address with the bits 31..18 value that the guest has put into the PCIIOBR. That is, writing to the PCIIOBR changes which section of the IO address space is visible in the 0xfe240000 window. Instead what QEMU's implementation does is move the window to whatever value the guest writes to the PCIIOBR register -- so if the guest writes 0 we put the window at 0 in system address space." Fix the problem by calling memory_region_set_alias_offset() instead of removing and re-adding the PCI ISA subregion on writes into PCIIOBR. At the same time, in sh_pci_device_realize(), don't set iobr since it is overwritten later anyway. Instead, pass the base address to memory_region_add_subregion() directly. Many thanks to Peter Maydell for the detailed problem analysis, and for providing suggestions on how to fix the problem. The virtqueue code sets up MemoryRegionCaches to access the virtqueue guest RAM data structures. The code currently assumes that VRingMemoryRegionCaches is initialized before device emulation code accesses the virtqueue. An assertion will fail in vring_get_region_caches() when this is not true. Device fuzzing found a case where this assumption is false (see below). Virtqueue guest RAM addresses can also be changed from a vCPU thread while an IOThread is accessing the virtqueue. This breaks the same assumption but this time the caches could become invalid partway through the virtqueue code. The code fetches the caches RCU pointer multiple times so we will need to validate the pointer every time it is fetched. Add checks each time we call vring_get_region_caches() and treat invalid caches as a nop: memory stores are ignored and memory reads return 0. The fuzz test failure is as follows: $ qemu -M pc -device virtio-blk-pci,id=drv0,drive=drive0,addr=4.0 \ -drive if=none,id=drive0,file=null-co://,format=raw,auto-read-only=off \ -drive if=none,id=drive1,file=null-co://,file.read-zeroes=on,format=raw \ -display none \ -qtest stdio endianness outl 0xcf8 0x80002020 outl 0xcfc 0xe0000000 outl 0xcf8 0x80002004 outw 0xcfc 0x7 write 0xe0000000 0x24 0x00ffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffab5cffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffabffffffab0000000001 inb 0x4 writew 0xe000001c 0x1 write 0xe0000014 0x1 0x0d The following error message is produced: qemu-system-x86_64: /home/stefanha/qemu/hw/virtio/virtio.c:286: vring_get_region_caches: Assertion `caches != NULL' failed. The tulip networking card emulation has an OOB issue in 'tulip_copy_tx_buffers' when the guest provide malformed descriptor. This test will trigger a ASAN heap overflow crash. To trigger this issue we can construct the data as following: 1. construct a 'tulip_descriptor'. Its control is set to '0x7ff | 0x7ff << 11', this will make the 'tulip_copy_tx_buffers's 'len1' and 'len2' to 0x7ff(2047). So 'len1+len2' will overflow 'TULIPState's 'tx_frame' field. This descriptor's 'buf_addr1' and 'buf_addr2' should set to a guest address. 2. write this descriptor to tulip device's CSR4 register. This will set the 'TULIPState's 'current_tx_desc' field. 3. write 'CSR6_ST' to tulip device's CSR6 register. This will trigger 'tulip_xmit_list_update' and finally calls 'tulip_copy_tx_buffers'. Following shows the backtrack of crash: ==31781==ERROR: AddressSanitizer: heap-buffer-overflow on address 0x628000007cd0 at pc 0x7fe03c5a077a bp 0x7fff05b46770 sp 0x7fff05b45f18 WRITE of size 2047 at 0x628000007cd0 thread T0 #0 0x7fe03c5a0779 (/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libasan.so.4+0x79779) #1 0x5575fb6daa6a in flatview_read_continue /home/test/qemu/exec.c:3194 #2 0x5575fb6daccb in flatview_read /home/test/qemu/exec.c:3227 #3 0x5575fb6dae66 in address_space_read_full /home/test/qemu/exec.c:3240 #4 0x5575fb6db0cb in address_space_rw /home/test/qemu/exec.c:3268 #5 0x5575fbdfd460 in dma_memory_rw_relaxed /home/test/qemu/include/sysemu/dma.h:87 #6 0x5575fbdfd4b5 in dma_memory_rw /home/test/qemu/include/sysemu/dma.h:110 #7 0x5575fbdfd866 in pci_dma_rw /home/test/qemu/include/hw/pci/pci.h:787 #8 0x5575fbdfd8a3 in pci_dma_read /home/test/qemu/include/hw/pci/pci.h:794 #9 0x5575fbe02761 in tulip_copy_tx_buffers hw/net/tulip.c:585 #10 0x5575fbe0366b in tulip_xmit_list_update hw/net/tulip.c:678 #11 0x5575fbe04073 in tulip_write hw/net/tulip.c:783 Signed-off-by: Li Qiang <liq3ea@163.com> Signed-off-by: Jason Wang <jasowang@redhat.com>

The resizable BAR capability is currently exposed read-only from the kernel and we don't yet implement a protocol for virtualizing it to the VM. Exposing it to the guest read-only introduces poor behavior as the guest has no reason to test that a control register write is accepted by the hardware. This can lead to cases where the guest OS assumes the BAR has been resized, but it hasn't. This has been observed when assigning AMD Vega GPUs. Note, this does not preclude future enablement of resizable BARs, but it's currently incorrect to expose this capability as read-only, so better to not expose it at all. This patch makes the Cocoa UI build again, fixes a potential memory leak, and ups the minimum OS X version to 10.5.
