Its broken for unknown reasons, and no-one has the macos knowledge/motivation to fix this mess 🤷♂️

with some luck, #57278 might fix the issue. That's something I've stumbled upon on GDAL, PROJ, etc... |

Maybe we should call it for what it is and remove official support for macos, and just direct users to homebrew/ conda /... instead?
