Access second pane vs. shift?

Not sure what’s changed, but I used to be able to access commands in the second pane via a modifier key (e.g., shift). That still works, but the first non-shift character I type updates the first pane.

Have I done something wrong?

No, you’ve just installed 10.8, which was a perfectly reasonable thing to do. :-)
