Is there a way to preserve the positions of other elements when some are closed?

I have created a dynamic add and close app with react-layout-grid. I have an issue however whenever I close an element, the element next to the one closed takes the shape of the closed element especially when the closed element is enlarged.

I would like the behaviour to be akin to this - close an element and other elements remain stationary (in their current positions).

How would I go about maintaining the positions of the remaining elements upon closing an element?
