Olofsson: Audiovisual Programming - Protocols, Black Boxes, and Chinese Whispers
Protocols are necessary for forming networks of control devices, thus all forms of communication. Their details shape how we experience them; mappings of (numerical) values assign understand meanings to them that humans can understand - or not. Different approaches can create black boxes - systematic mappings from inputs to outputs of which we know very little and can only observe - or meanings can begin to mutate as the messages are being passed on from one participant to the next, as in the Chinese Whispers game.
In this seminar we will study the roles and implementations of protocols and connections between sensors, devices and systems; the concepts of mapping, scaling and filtering; and the role of encryption and analysis of data in different areas of the communication networks.
