But it was also suspiciously faster yesterday.

I'm suspecting that previous the CG steps did nothing since the rigid bodies were never marked as optimized. As a result, they didn't fail, but now that things are marked as optimized, they are trying to do things and failing.

I would remove this example. It is old, and soon it will substituted by newer and better scripts. Alternatively remove the CG optimization.
