MW intended "Gayā-śiras". The samāsa "Gayaśiras" is wrong grammatically. |
@aumsanskrit |
@aumsanskrit what is your full name and background, may I please know? |
Yes, you're correct @aumsanskrit. I see now, that both the forms gayaśiras and gayāśiras exist as alt. forms of the name of the same mountain in different works. @drdhaval2785, |
Namaste Gasyoun, My full name is Scott Rhodes. I reside in the USA. My life is devoted to the study of the Sanskrit Language. My entry into the deep study of Sanskrit resulted from viewing the extensive DVD series entitlled "Learning Sanskrit Language Structure" by the Great Professor of Advanced Sanskrit Studies, "V.N. Jha". He is the head of Rishi Rina Trust at https://www.vidyavatika.org/ God Bless |
Scott has submitted over 100 corrections in the past 1 month from correction submission page of Cologne. That's why I thought that it will be more beneficial to all if he is brought onboard the github world. He will be able to submit more corrections from PR mode. |
I bow to Scott and Dhaval. Long live our voluntary movement. @aumsanskrit what city in USA? What education? |
Namaste Gasyoun, God Bless you sir. I live in Northern California. The city is called Weed. My education is up to three years at University. My last years were at the University of California in Berkeley. Since 2016 I have been studying Sanskrit everyday as much as possible. In this life I hope to read the entire Mahābhārata as well as the Rāmāyaṇa etc. Currently I alternate my Sanskrit study as follows: one day studying the Grammar of the SiddhāntaKaumudī and then one day reading from the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. I find that alternating my study in this way is very fruitful. |
It seems that Scott began submitting corrections (primarily to MW) last year. Current count of corrections submitted is 272, with about 250 being to MW. Thanks, Scott! |
Ultimately, what correction is to be made ? |
'gayaśiras' is to be there. |
Acc. to PWG (as well as from above comments), 'gayaSiras' and 'gayASiras' are acceptable spellings. 'gayASiras' is a headword only in MW and PWG, while 'gayaSiras' appears as headword in 8 dictionaries (ref. dalglob1 display). Jim's Opinion: No change needed. @Andhrabharati If you agree, go ahead and close this issue. |
Now that you have pushed it on to me, I had a closer look at the said entry in the MW print.
And it is seen that the cdsl text at the entry old: It cannot be having "Gayā-śiras" in the matter, as the next entry ( which in no case can become So, we have both the variants with short and long vowel appropriately placed at @aumsanskrit , does the analysis satisfy you? At the end, the ball is now in the hands of Dhaval / Jim to change the cdsl text and close the issue. |
Your analysis is perfect, thank you. |
installed the 'old/new' change. |
