On two Catalina machines, after the b21 update (or perhaps the b20 update as well, not sure) the system refuses to allow the quicklook component to run.

qlm1

Then right-click the app and select "Open":
ql3

Then try to quicklook a .md file in Finder:
qlm2

I did the update on a Big Sur machine as well, and it popped up a similar dialog. Doing a right-click "Open" on the QLMarkdown.app and allowing it to run did allow the quicklook plugin to work fine on Big Sur.

However, Catalina didn't work in the same way and it refuses to run the quicklook plugin. Even though I am able to run QLMarkdown.app.

I tried running in Terminal:

qlmanage -r
qlmanage -r cache

and then re-ran QLMarkdown.app and it still has the same result on Catalina. "Extension org.sbarex.QLMarkdown.QLExtension not found" when trying to quicklook a .md file.

So it appears that a reboot fixed it (on both Catalina machines). Go figure.

What threw me off is that in 21 releases of QLMarkdown here, none of them have required a reboot until now. I have no explanation 🤷‍♂️

I'll close this unless someone thinks there is a way to improve the reliability of installing updates.

My guess is that this is a bug/glitch or oddity related to how macOS scans and deals with quicklook appex plugins. I know it's been an issue with other app plugins like AUv3 plugins for other developers. So maybe this is just an unfortunate side-effect we should be aware of.
