Dear Zachary,

First of all I would like to thank you for NV which is a great software that I now use every day (with the simple note sync).

I have a suggestion related to the use of tags. As far as I understand, Tags are only used for spotlight search and are searched as all the note contents in NV.

Suggestion : Why not add a "tag filtering" filed in NV ?
It could be below or on the right of the main search field.
The interest would be to restrict the search to only the notes that include the tags in the "filter" field.

Personally it would be of great interest. Let me explain why. All my life (personal and work) is linked to "music". I'm a researcher on brain & music, I'm teaching in this field and in my personnal life I play music, I listen to music etc..
Thus I have hundreds of notes where the word music appears in. When tagging my note I often have the "Music" tag but it is completed with other tags such as "Course", "Research", "Guitar", "score"...

If I want to see list of all my notes that I have used to prepare my "courses", I can search with Music and Course but if these words also appears in other notes I will have too many results.

Thus I propose to introduce this "tag filtering" possibility. Tags would be considered as a means of classifying information. Of course, the normal functioning of NV is preserved if nothing is introduced in the filtering field.

What do you think of this proposition ? Is there a place where I can submit it ?

Sylvain

Thanks for the feature request. Others have asked for similar options regarding adding and searching tags.

It would be great to keep one single field and use tokens as Mail.app and Finder are doing in Lion. This keeps the simplicity of a search field and allow power users to make advanced search by using tag:the_tag or something like that. I talk about power users because making it discoverable by a drop down menu (as done in Mail.app) would hide the note list.

-1 to additional search field but +1 to search bar tokens. "tag:" and "title:" shouldn't be unobtrusive and will add some nice flexibility to search.

NV is so good I just kind of assumed tag:tag_pattern was already supported. In fact, I used it for months.

You see, I tricked reality. I believed so strongly in tag filtering that it happened. (Or I unconsciously refrained from using any tag-words outside of notes tagged with them, so my searches always worked out about right. Whatever.) I'm not aware of a name for this sort of "believing makes it so" thinking--be it a quirk in reality or no--but it reminds me of Wile E. Coyote's miraculous ability to defy gravity so long as he doesn't realize he has left the ground.

But tonight I unwittingly looked down. So +1 tag filtering.
