Note:

There is a newer, more powerfull and well maintained alternative to this aproach: https://github.com/travisghansen/hass-pfsense it supports much more features, including gateway status.

I personally still like this approach though, since I don't want my homeassistant to have any kind of control over pfsense. I really just want gateway status and that is all.

You can add this as a custom repo in HACS. Replacing the original that has been archived.

Gateways status for pfSense

Support for pfSense gateways status monitoring using alexpmorris / pfsense-status-gateways-json script. Check https://github.com/alexpmorris/pfsense-status-gateways-json on how to install it on pfSense.

Returns True or False depending on the status of the gateway. Useful to trigger an external reboot or power-cycle of the ISP modem, or similar.
