There is a known problem with some rigged mesh and fitted mesh on AMD graphics cards with old driver versions and certain viewer graphics settings - please see BUG-5156 and BUG-5139 for this bug.
For an immediate workaround to this problem, go to Me (in the top menu bar) -> Preferences -> Graphics -> Advanced -> Untick "Hardware skinning".
Most cases of this bug should now be fixed on the latest versions of the viewer (which you have) but you will still need to be using at least the 14.4 catalyst graphics drivers to fix all cases.
I suggest you update to the 13.9 Catalyst, as this driver generally works well for SL (you'll find that it is pretty common for AMD drivers to cause problems on SL & the 13.9 was one of the better older drivers if you cannot update any further).
Your broken avatar likely wont be fixed on the 13.9 Catalyst though.
So the choices are:
Me -> Preferences -> Graphics -> Advanced -> Tick "Advanced Lighting Model" (this may not fix the problem but try it and see).
Or, Me -> Preferences -> Graphics -> Advanced -> Untick "Hardware skinning" (this will fix the problem but a lot of rigged mesh will have ugly shading & have patches of white or black with hardware skinning disabled).
Or, Switch to using one of the standard non-mesh starter avatars: Me -> Choose an avatar -> Classic -> Pick any one of these -> Select.
