Since jQuery is going to be deprecated (for me and some others, it already is), I guess it's time to select2 be a standalone library instead of a jQuery plugin.

Since jQuery is going to be deprecated

I know that it's going to be changing, but deprecated?

For what it's worth, this is something that has been on the roadmap for a while. Unfortunately, Select2 is a large project and removing the dependency on jQuery will take a while over the course of many pull requests.

+1 for this suggestion. Select2 is the last JS plugin I need jQuery for, so it would be amazing to drop the dependency for it and focus on keeping select2 as slim & fast as possible without jQuery.

Thanks again for the great job guys. Really appreciate it!

Just a suggestion.

It is better for everyone to work on it bit by bit and submit merge requests.
The codes that relies on jQuery can be replaced with vanilla version.

Slowly but surely it will be a no-dependencies component that everyone loves.

@kevin-brown please can you lock this issue? There's 👍 reaction you can add to first post.

Let's see a pull request.

We don't have immediate plans to provide this. We are focused to fix some major UI bugs (that are majority of issues and PR's). But if you open a PR with unit tests, I will be glad to review and approve if everything is ok 👍
