I really like the minimalistic approach of the user interface but I have some comments about it.

If we agree to the following sentences:

  • A car DVR is a general public gear that may be used by ordinary people.
  • Ordinary people are not technical people. They never read all the instructions from all sources.
  • Ordinary people want to use an app that does not require to memorize its usage.

then my suggestions are:

  1. Settings should not be hidden under Start button (long press)
  2. Help should not be hidden inside settings
  3. FAV button should not require the reading of the corresponding help paragraph.
  4. Focus mode should be more understandable (e.g. full words instead of initial letter).

One solution is to change "FAV" button to "Help". On the new "Help screen" you can inform how to change settings and how to configure storage of recorded media.
Information about how many hours (or minutes, or days...) can be cycle recorded with the current settings.
Requiring action to permanent store some media should be avoided because it is misleading users who might think that without any action they will not find the media they need. But it can remain as an option for low memory devices that might have a very short recording cycle.

A UI is like the package of a product. Wrong package attracts less customers. I believe this application has a great potential.
