Grand Vision One Stop Shop for a Plan On A Page

Based on what I have achieved so far, I believe there is a huge potential to create something really good and with a potential demand.

The vision is for:

  • A web app with a really good visual design.
  • The app will summarise a plan in a non-GANTT chart visual format, which is easier to read than a GANTT and which is designed for presentation to management but will also act as a good way to summarise a plan in a more concise way for use with the team who are delivering the plan.
  • The app will make use of the hierarchical structure of the Work Breakdown Structure of a Plan in generating the view.
  • The app will also makes use of swim lanes where appropriate to help layout a plan in a way which is appropriate for the audience (in particular placing elements which may not be close within the WBS together because they are close by some other criteria (such as ownership of activity).
  • The app will be capable of taking a plan and laying it out automatically, but driven by some parameters to help the algorithm.
  • It will be possible for the user to take control of the layout and be as prescriptive as they want to be.

The envisioned workflow is:

  • The user uploads a plan either in a native format (e.g. MS Project) or as an Excel export with specified columns.
  • The app will immediately display the plan as a Gantt chart and will also generate a default layout of the plan on a page, using the hierarchical structure of the plan to generate the view.
  • The initial view may well not be what the user wants but will in most cases be something which is useful and will often be massively faster than if the user created that view manually.
  • By specifying a few criteria, the user will be able to influence the layout quite quickly and improve it.

Where swimlanes are used this will be often be required because the app won't be able to infer how the swimlanes should be

  • The app will create visually striking one page (predominantly) views of a
