Looks good to me.
I don't usually run mongod --dbpath db when starting the app, is this command necessary ?

Not by itself, it is just a default “start a Mongo database” command that may be adapted if you know how to start a Mongo database yourself :)
Or do you mean the app can run without a db ?

I confirm the app can't start without a running Mongo database to connect to.
