A description explaining the "why" would help – what's new in 1.0.0? Why is it dev and not a full release, and is that OK?

Sorry for the lack of context, not much is new in 1.0.0 (besides internal cleanup) but it's been quite stable for a while and folks from the community have expressed a desire to have the version be bumped to indicate it's stable/production ready. It's 1.0.0-dev.0 mostly to make sure all is well before bumping to 1.0.0 (since small refactorings took place) and plan to publish 1.0.0 next week.
